Our Life in Christ: Foot Washing – Eucharist – Prayer Struggle

In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen. May the blessing of the Father who calls us and His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ who saves us, and the Holy Spirit who sanctifies and transforms us be with us all, that we may hear His word and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. Amen.

Beloved in Christ,

On this sacred day, we delve into three profound acts of our Lord Jesus Christ that encapsulate the essence of Christian living: His humility in washing the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and His earnest prayer in Gethsemane. These acts are not mere historical events but are guiding lights for our daily walk with Christ.

1. The Humility of Foot Washing

In the Gospel according to St. John, we read:

“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

John 13:14

Our Lord, the Master of all, stooped to perform the task of a servant. This act was a profound lesson in humility and service. He demonstrated that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured by our willingness to serve others selflessly.

Reflecting on this, we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to humble ourselves and serve those around us? Do we see the face of Christ in our neighbors, especially in those who are marginalized or in need?

2. The Institution of the Holy Eucharist

During the Last Supper, Jesus established the Holy Eucharist, offering Himself as the true Passover Lamb. St. Paul recounts:

“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread… and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.'”

1 Corinthians 11:23-24

In the Eucharist, we partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, uniting ourselves intimately with Him. This sacrament is the source and summit of our Christian life, nourishing our souls and strengthening us to live according to His will.

Let us approach the Holy Communion with reverence and gratitude, recognizing the immense love and sacrifice it represents.

3. The Earnest Prayer in Gethsemane

In the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the weight of the world’s sins, Jesus prayed fervently:

“Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Luke 22:42

This prayer reveals the depth of Jesus’ obedience and submission to the Father’s will. It serves as a model for us in times of trial and uncertainty. Through prayer, we align our will with God’s, finding strength and peace in His divine plan.

Are we persistent in our prayers, especially during challenging times? Do we seek God’s will above our own desires?

Living the Threefold Path

These three acts—humble service, sacrificial love, and earnest prayer—are not isolated events but interconnected aspects of our Christian journey. They call us to:

  • Serve others with humility, recognizing the dignity of every person.
  • Partake of the Eucharist with a heart full of faith and gratitude.
  • Engage in sincere prayer, seeking communion with God and alignment with His will.

By embracing this path, we draw closer to Christ, becoming more like Him in our thoughts, words, and actions.

May we, inspired by our Lord’s example, commit ourselves anew to a life of humble service, deep communion, and fervent prayer.

May the Lord bless us, transform our hearts and minds, that our homes may stand on the Rock, our hands serve in the harvest, and our hearts long for Heaven. Amen.
