Palm Sunday Sermon – Make Room for the King
In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen. May the blessing of the Father who calls us, and His Only Begotten Son who saves us, and the Holy Spirit who sanctifies and transforms us be with us all, that we may hear His word and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. Amen.
Introduction: What We Will Learn Today
Palm Sunday is not just a celebration—it is a revelation.
The Church is asking: Will you receive the King? Will your heart become His throne?
We will walk through five themes:
1. The King Who Comes in Humility
2. The Untamed Foal – The Human Heart
3. Untying the Soul – Freedom in Christ
4. Laying Down Our Lives – True Worship
5. The Praise of Children – A Pure Heart
Theme One: The King Who Comes in Humility
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9 NKJV)
Christ did not come with power, armies, or pride. He came lowly.
True greatness is humility
Christ the Model:
He entered on a donkey.
He washed His disciples’ feet.
He stood silent before His accusers.
He accepted the Cross.
“Learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.” (Matthew 11:29 NKJV)
Spiritual Meaning:
True greatness is not proving yourself—it is emptying yourself.
Humility is not weakness; it is Christlikeness.
Daily Life:
At work, when someone takes credit and you choose peace.
At home, when you apologize first.
In church, when you serve unseen.
True power is gentleness
Christ the Model:
Christ did not crush sinners—He restored them.
He spoke gently to the Samaritan woman.
He forgave those who crucified Him.
Spiritual Meaning:
Gentleness is strength under control.
It is power that heals instead of wounds.
Daily Life:
Parenting with calm instead of anger.
Marriage with softness instead of escalation.
Work with dignity instead of reaction.
True victory is through the Cross
Christ the Model:
Christ conquered not by force—but by sacrifice.
He won through surrender.
Spiritual Meaning:
Victory in God’s Kingdom comes through dying to self.
Daily Life:
Walking away from arguments.
Fighting hidden sins.
Choosing forgiveness through pain.
Theme Two: The Untamed Foal – The Human Heart
Christ the Model:
Christ chose the untamed foal.
He did not reject it—He transformed it.
Spiritual Meaning:
As St. Cyril of Alexandria teaches, the foal represents the untamed soul.
Without Christ, the heart is restless, wandering, and without direction.
“The foal… became clean when Christ sat upon them.” — St. Cyril of Alexandria
Daily Reality of the Untamed Heart:
A heart that is restless.
A mind that runs in every direction.
A life that feels out of control.
You feel scattered—too many thoughts, anxiety, no peace.
Comparison, distraction, spiritual dryness.
Trying to pray—but the mind is everywhere.
This is the untamed heart.
And if you think this is just an idea… let me show you a soul that lived this reality.
A Living Example: When the Heart Is Untamed… and Then Transformed
My beloved…
There is a story in our Church that we do not just read… we tremble before it.
It is the story of St. Mary of Egypt.
She herself says:
“I went to Alexandria when I was twelve years old… and for seventeen years, I lived as a public woman and never refused my body to anyone.”
— The Golden Legend
Seventeen years… a life not just of sin, but of complete surrender to sin.
The Synaxarium says:
“She became a net through which Satan caught innumerable souls.”
One day, she followed people going to Jerusalem—not to repent, but to continue her life.
“Take my body in payment for the passage.” — The Golden Legend
She arrived… and went to enter the Church of the Resurrection.
But something happened.
“An invisible force pushed me back… again and again I tried to enter… and I was repulsed.” — The Golden Legend
Everyone else entered.
She could not.
And in that moment… she realized:
It was not the door that was closed… it was her heart.
“I realized this was because of my dreadful crimes… I beat my breast and wept bitterly.” — The Golden Legend
She lifted her eyes to an icon of the Virgin Mary and prayed:
“Obtain pardon for my sins… I will renounce the world… lead me to salvation… teach me what is true.”
— The Golden Legend / Laura Swan
This was not a small prayer.
This was surrender.
She returned to the door…
And this time—nothing stopped her.
She entered freely.
From that moment, everything changed.
She crossed the Jordan with only three loaves of bread and lived in the desert for forty-seven years.
“For seventeen years I struggled like fighting wild beasts… but by the grace of God, I overcame.” — The Golden Legend
The woman who once lived in sin… became a saint.
The woman who was bound… became free.
This is the mystery of Palm Sunday.
Transformation:
When Christ sits on the untamed heart:
Chaos becomes peace.
Restlessness becomes direction.
Sin becomes repentance.
The soul becomes a throne.
My beloved… it was not the door that was closed… it was her heart.
And the moment her heart opened… Christ entered.
Theme Three: Untying the Soul – Freedom in Christ
Christ the Model:
Christ sends His disciples to untie the bound.
He always comes to liberate, never to leave us chained.
Spiritual Meaning:
Sin, fear, and habits bind the soul.
But Christ breaks every chain.
Daily Life:
“I can’t change.”
“I always fall.”
Fear, anxiety, people-pleasing.
Avoiding repentance.
These are ropes—not truth.
Christ’s Call:
“You are not meant to stay tied.”
Theme Four: Laying Down Our Lives – True Worship
Christ the Model:
Christ laid down His life completely.
He gave Himself without holding back.
Spiritual Meaning:
Worship is not words—it is surrender.
“Lay down not garments, but your very selves before Him.”
Daily Life:
Letting go of control.
Choosing patience when tired.
Serving without recognition.
Letting go of pride and ego.
This is true worship.
Theme Five: The Praise of Children – A Pure Heart
Christ the Model:
Christ received the praise of children.
He lifted simplicity over pride.
“Out of the mouth of babes… You have perfected praise.” (Matthew 21:16 NKJV)
Spiritual Meaning:
A pure heart sees what pride cannot.
Simplicity leads to true worship.
Daily Life:
Simple prayer: “Lord, help me.”
Trusting God without answers.
Rejoicing in small blessings.
Conclusion
Christ comes in humility → Will I accept Him?
My heart is the foal → Will I surrender it?
My soul must be untied → What binds me?
True worship is surrender → What must I lay down?
A pure heart praises → Can I become like a child?
Palm Sunday is happening inside you today.
Will you let Him enter?
May the Lord bless us, transform our hearts and minds, that our homes may stand on the Rock, our hands serve in the harvest, and our hearts long for Heaven. Amen.
